easy herbal pot holders

Some of the best parts of fall are the lovely spicy scents this time of year brings. Why not bring some of these scents into your home by making some scented hot pads from the herbs in your garden and the spices in your cupboard? They are basically hot pads, with spices and herbs sewn into the padding, so when you sit a hot pan or teapot on them, the warmth releases the spicy scent, while protecting your tabletop.

You’ll need two 9" pieces of fabric, some dried herbs from the garden, and doesn’t everyone have some old bottles of spices in the cupboard that probably need to be replaced? You can use the ‘old’ spices for your hot pads, and purchase new ones for the cupboard. If you don’t have cotton batting around the house, check with friends who quilt... quilters ALWAYS have odd bits of batting around. If you don’t feel like a trip to the fabric store to buy a tiny bit of batting, I have found old, stained (but clean) hotpads work well as the base....RECYCLE!

Materials for each pad:

Two 9" pieces of cotton batting

Two 10" pieces of your choice of cotton fabric

thread

Herbs and spices: You’ll need 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the mixture per hot pad

Suggestions: Whole cloves, whole allspice, broken cinnamon sticks, dried orange or lemon peel, dried Rosemary, Lavender, Oregano....what do you have around the house? Just pick herbs and spices that can be crushed fairly small, or you will have a very lumpy hot pad!

Place the pieces of cotton fabric face-to-face on your work surface. Then stack and place the 2 batting pieces on top of the stacked 2 pieces of cotton fabric. Sew around the 3 1/2 sides of the square, about 1/2 inch in from the edge. NOTE: You need to leave at least 4" of the edge unsewn, so you can turn the fabric right side out. Do this now, being sure to poke the corners out nice and square.

Pour your spice and herb filling through the opening on side four. Be sure to pour the filling between the 2 layers of batting. Fold in the unsewn edges, and stitch closed.

Voila! You now have a basic hot pad! You may want to go a step further, and shake the filling into the 4 corners, then stitch an X thru the middle of the hot pad, so the filling will stay evenly distributed. NOTE: Sewing machine needles do not like to run into whole

Tips for Great Smoothies

 Chill the blender container before beginning so that the warmer container

does not melt the ice cream.

 Chill the glasses.

 Judge the ratio of strawberries to ice cream by the color of the shake. Add

more strawberries if the shake needs more color. The shake should be an

attractive pink color.

 Use only the best berries.

 A scoop or two will do you. Don’t add too much frozen yogurt or ice cream.

Make it just a bit rich, not an ice cream shake.

 Frozen fruits are best. Without frozen fruit, you will be tempted to add too

much frozen yogurt or ice.

 Keep it simple. Too many flavors are confusing to the palate. The very

best smoothies have only three or four flavors.

 If it’s ripe, freeze it. Frozen bananas, strawberries and peaches, make

great smoothies..

The Best Strawberry Shake

What could be better than a tall strawberry

shake? You’ll find that you can deliver a better

shake than the local car hop. This one is loaded

with fresh berries, premium ice cream, and

topped with whipped cream.

Nothing is better than a thick strawberry shake

made with the plump, ripe berries. The following

recipe makes two shakes.

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups of ripe, fresh strawberries

1/2 cup granulated sugar

about 3 cups premium vanilla ice cream

2/3 cup half and half (or a 50:50 mixture of milk

and whipping cream)

sweetened whipped cream for topping

Directions

This recipe makes two shakes, made one at a time in a blender.

1. Wash, trim, and slice the berries. Sprinkle the sugar on the berries and let

them soak at room temperate for two hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

2. Place half the strawberries and half the ice cream in a blender plus half

the juice from the berries. Puree until smooth and combined. Add half of

the half and half and mix.

3. Put the shake in a tall, chilled glass while you make the second shake.

4. Top the shakes with whipped cream and an optional strawberry and serve.

make an empty jar look grungy

A tip from me: :-) Did you know that you can make any empty clean jar or can look old a grungy with just a few household items? Clean your old jar or can and let it air dry. Spray with a spray adhesive and then sprinkle with Ground Cinnamon! Both your spray adhesive and your Ground Cinnamon are available at Wal Mart in the Craft Department! I do this outside because of the fumes from the spray adhesive. That's all there is to it! Place drieds in your jar or can, a handpoured candle or anything you wish!

oatmeal snowball recipe

Oatmeal Soapball Recipe

oatmeal Soap Balls recipe:

1 cup instant oatmeal

1 bar mild soap, such as Ivory or Pure & Natural

4-5 Tablespoons of water

10 drops essential oil or fragrance...(oil safe for skin)

Place the soap in a ziplock bag and break up with a hammer. Then grate oatmeal or use a mini-processor, but don't make it into a flour. Put into a bowl. Do the same with the soap.

add the water (and scent) and blend well. Shape into balls and put on wax paper to dry.
Balls can be put into containers, wrapped with cellophane or plastic wrap and tied with raffia. A gift tag added to the raffia is a nice touch also.

*Oatmeal is great for exfoliating the skin and leaving it smooth and refreshed.

make your own play dough

7-8 cups all-purpose or bread flour

3 cups salt

3 tablespoons cream of tartar

1/4 cup vegetable oil

4 cups hot water

food coloring

Mix seven cups of flour together with the salt and cream of tartar in the bowl of your stand-type mixer. Add the oil and water and knead with a dough hook in your electric stand-type mixer for five to six minutes. (If you are kneading by hand, knead for eight to ten minutes.) Add more flour to get a soft, workable dough.

Store the dough in a sealed container to keep it from becoming dry. If it becomes too dry, place it back in the mixer bowl and knead in a dribble of water.

How to make easy apple slice embeds

Apple Slices

I also make Apple Slices but I’m going to tell you the EASY way to make them! Pour a tad of your melted and scented wax onto a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Let the wax cool a tad until you see a film forming over the top of the wax. (About 3 or 4 minutes depending on the temperature in your home.) Using a spice jar lid (I use the cheap spice jar lids that I take off my ground cinnamon), cut out circles from the wax just like you were making cookies with a cookie cutter. Do this in the same places over and over again on the wax until the circles are hard enough for you to pick up and then break them in half. You have grubby apple slices! ☺ Dye the wax for these very lightly with your Ivory Dye and scent with whatever scent you would like. (I use the Apple Crisp!) ☺

tropical body butter

8 oz Deodorized Cocoa Butte

5 oz Refined Shea Butter
2.5 oz Coconut Oil, 76 degree
.5 oz Tapioca Pure (helps give a silky smooth, not greasy after feel)
a few drops of Tocopherol T-50, or vitamin E (this is an antioxidant, retarding rancidity in your oils/butters, NOT a preservative!)
Preservative (Liquapar, Optiphen, etc)
Fragrance oil or Essential oil to scent
Directions:

Melt your butters slowly with gentle heat in a bowl, then add in the coconut oil and tocopherol (or vitamin E). Allow to cool for about 30 mins until it is starting to thicken up again.
As your butter/oil mixture continues to cool and thicken, use a stick blender to whip air and lighten the texture. Gently sprinkle in a tiny portion of the Tapioca Pure, similar to how you would add small portions of flour to a cake battter mixture. This will prevent any lumping.
Next, add your preservative and any fragrance or essential oils. Spoon your mousse like concoction into jars and seal with lids. This whipped body butter will become firmer as it sets up at room temperature.
